Brief CV

George P. Nikolopoulos has studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Athens (1982) and he holds a MSc in Criminological Studies from the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (1985) and a PhD in Criminology from the Faculty of Law and Criminology / School of Criminology of the Catholic University of Louvain (1993). He is member of the Athens Bar Association (in full suspension of practising law since 22-11-2016), the Central Scientific Council for Prisons and he was also for two consecutive terms President of the Administrative Board of “Epanodos” - the Greek Official Centre for the Resettlement of Ex-Offenders under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights (2010-2016). Since 22-11-2016 he has been nominated Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights at the Greek Ombudsman’s Office as well as responsible for exercising the competence of the “National Preventive Mechanism against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” according to the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of the General Assembly of the United Nations (OPCAT), ratified by Law 4228/2014. He has participated in many law-making committees as well as in international meetings and conferences.
