Brief CV

Alexandra Halkias is a Professor at the Department of Sociology, Panteion University, Athens, Greece. She has also taught at the University of California, San Diego, at San Diego State University and at the M.I.T. in Boston, USA. She has a Ph.D. in Communication, University of California, San Diego, a C.Phil. from the same and a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. She currently is serving as Honorary Visiting Professor at the Media Discourse Center of De Montfort University of Leicester. She has served as Visiting Scholar at the Centre of Gender Studies of Stockholm University, and as Guest Fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (AISSR), Programme Group on Care, Health and the Body. She has published numerous articles and books in Greek and international publications.  Her book The Empty Cradle of Democracy: Sex, abortion and nationalism in modern Greece was published by Duke University Press (2004) and translated into Greek (Alexandria Press 2007). She is also author of Emfyles Viaiotites (Gendered violences: power, discourse, subjectivities) (Alexandria 2011). She is editor or co-editor of several books including Nation and Gender in Crisis: Masculinities Frontstage (Futura, 2021); a book on the social body and discourse (Katarti press-Dini 2005, 2006) with Martha Michailidou, and a book on the politics of LGBT identities in Greece (Plethron Press, 2012, 2021) with Anna Apostolelli. Current research interests: the intersection of nationalism with ‘the other’ at the site of gendered subjectivities in crisis; human to nonhuman relationalities and the politics of vision.
