The lectures concentrate their attention on the evolution of civil-military relations in Modern Greece and Turkey from the Ottoman times to present day with a reference to the relevant theories.  Another Balkan country, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the states emerging from the former Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Fyrom) is added every other semester.

The focus of this class is on issues surrounding the field of military sociology.  Attention is paid to the birth and evolution of this field as well as to crucial issues such as women-gender and the military, family and the military, war games and the public’s perception of war, private military firms and military-society relations as well as “sensitive” topics such as military and unionism and military and rape.
 
Islam and Society in Southeastern Europe and the EU 763  
    The attention of this class is on the Islamic religion and its growing influence on the society and politics of Southeast European States.  Drawing from examples of the treatment of Islam in certain EU states (eg. UK, France, Italy, Germany. Holland and Denmark), the class concentrates its attention on the historical interaction between Islam and SEE States and Societies and the challenges that the newly arrived Muslim immigrants bring to them both.

(Another way of approaching the issue of religious and national identity among the diaspora immigrants in Modern Greece, is by looking at the evolution of social, educational, religious and political life of the Hellenic Diaspora in the five continents.  Specific Hellenic communities are examined [in the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, South Africa, Australia, UAE, and China] and comparisons are made).

(The seminar concentrates its attention on the writing of research papers regarding specific issues on minorities and newly arrived immigrants in the SEE states.  Such issues can be, the education of Islamic Women-Girls from either the Minority or the Immigrant community, the sectarian differences among Islamic immigrant communities, Treating Health Issues in either Immigrant or Minority groups, Roma and their Education, etc)
